Storytelling is an art, it takes years of trial and error before it’s mastered. In this article, I will be going over 5 top reasons why you should start storytelling ASAP. In the end, it is all about monetizing your brand, however, the journey to that phase does take time, a minimum of 6-12 months before you have a chance at converting a member of your audience into a buying and loyal customer.

Beginning Story Telling Online

In the beginning, you will sound scripted, noticeably uncomfortable or start rambling unless you’re a natural-born extrovert or have years of practice in sales.

Let me tell you one thing, I was that beginner when I first started my company on social media. Although I had the right passion and motivation, my stories often were all over the place and had no direction or a strong call to action. Believe it or not, I’m a shy person in my natural form. It’s hard to believe for many of my friends, colleagues, or competition, on the outside I present as a strong, confident and fearless woman, but on the inside, I’m a shy 7-year-old little girl. It was only after taking Toastmasters courses and having to learn how to speak in public, that I can get out of my comfort zone to succeed.

The way I started Samson Virtual was on Facebook. I didn’t even have an Instagram page. I started from scratch – zero followers with zero content. Now I have over 3000 REAL followers and am only going to increase. I have not purchased likes or followers, I have a strategic audience base that is relatively low in comparison to the volume I could have if I just wanted “random” followers.

Know Your Audience

Time and time again, I do advise clients never to purchase followers to appear “famous” online. At first glance, it seems impressive, however, the biggest indicator of false likes/followers/engagement is how inconsistent the posts are in sheer numbers. One day it will be 10 likes, the following 1500, eventually dwindling to a percentage that is less than roughly .07% which is considered standard for Facebook and Instagram, 4.21%.

Although I don’t recommend buying followers, however, it’s not a bad idea to use influencers to attract their followers to your page and increase your numbers that way. I have used influencer’s in the past for my client’s portfolios and the strategy worked because the audience of the influencer was in alignment with the product my client was selling. Using those types of tools are smart, leveraging “clout” to monetize is great, however, the planets have to align for that to be a profitable result. With unique growth strategies in place, it is still best to have an organic following and then market to them using storytelling.¬†¬†

1. Build an Emotional Connection

When you first begin your efforts in social media marketing, it’s almost as frightening as public speaking, the worst feeling is when you look at the count of numbers of viewers and it’s a low number, it’s easy to get discouraged. Don’t. Once you understand your audience base and attract the followers you want, you start speaking to them and build value by providing various content. Eventually, your followers will be relying on you for their daily information, humor, positivity, recommendations, and guidance. They will worry about you if you don’t post as regularly and develop a connection that is deeper than just a quick sale.

2. Engage with your Audience

Asking your audience for advice, feedback, tips, or even recommendations will make them feel valued and important. Every single one of us wants to feel like our voice and opinion matters, so make an effort to rely on others to provide value. It’s reciprocal. Asking questions, feedback, and including them in a decision makes it fun, interesting, and engaging.

3. Build Loyalty

After being consistent on social media for a minimum of 6 months, you get a loyal follower base if you provide enough value, authenticity, and inclusion of the followers to your life. You don’t have to share everything, but enough to where there is a vulnerability factor that is rare. Your followers will start referring to your business, buying from you, and advocating on your behalf. They would be proud to mention your name online or in person because you have won them over and that is the biggest compliment and measure of success

4. Humanize Your Brand

Humanizing your brand is the smartest way to sell, having a representative advocate and become the “face of your company” makes your brand approachable, customers want to interact with you, provide you with regular feedback and develop a deep sense of connection with you and your brand increasing the chance of a sales conversion.

5. Close Sales

With the mentioned four factors, you will be able to convert your followers to customers if you have a great product, advocate, and develop a storytelling process.
